Lupita Nyong’o has had a whirlwind year. She starred in the emotional film “12 Years a Slave”, which has won her praise and awards around the globe, including the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2014 Oscars. Amazingly, it was her first motion picture role.
The 31-year-old Nyong’o is looked upon as a beautiful young actress and role model for young women around the globe. But in her speech at the Essence Awards, celebrating black women in Hollywood, she told the audience that she hasn’t always felt pretty. She tells the crowd that she struggled with her self-esteem and even prayed to God to make her skin lighter.
This amazing, inspiring speech is a must hear for all young women, and especially young black women, to remind them that we are all beautiful.
