If you’re a boater you’ve likely seen dolphins playing in the wake of a boat or riding the bow waves. It’s a pretty amazing sight! You may have even been lucky enough to see orcas, or killer whales, swimming nearby. But have you seen killer whales chasing your boat? To be honest I’d be a bit freaked out by that as they’re huge animals, so it would really depend on the size of the boat that I was on to determine my fear level.
I’m very lucky to be able to say that I’ve done a lot of boating over the years and I have seen dolphins and whales, but nothing like this!!
This video shows a pod of killer whales chasing a speed boat off the coast of La Paz, Mexico. You can see the giant mammals jumping right off the aft of the boat and practically on top of it. As the boat speeds along you can also see the whales swimming right under the surface of the water, just inches from the boat. I figure the whales think that hey, let’s take advantage of these loud machines in our waters. Might as well have some fun with them and enjoy the ride! You can tell by the screams and squeals of the people on board that they’re pretty amazed by this experience. I’d be amazed too and wishing for a bigger boat!!
I’m just glad for everyone involved that the whales were simply having fun in the wake of the boat, swimming and jumping, as this could have gone a totally different way. But it didn’t, so let’s enjoy this clip of man meets machine meets massive orcas!
